The term 'redfish' includes 4 different species which are described here: Sebastes marinus mentella, Sebastes marinus marinus, Sebastes viviparus and Helicolenus dactylopterus. Biology, distribution and exploitation of the first 2 species are presented. Redfish has a very wide distribution over the NE Atlantic, Iceland, Greenland, and NW Atlantic. The following areas are described in detail: Coast of Labrador and NE Newfoundland, Gulf of St. Lawrence, S Coast of Newfoundland and St. Lawrence channel, coast of Cape Breton and Nova Scotia, the George Bank South Channel and Nentucket shoals. Redfish biology is discussed under headings: life habits and migration; reproduction and growth; parasites; factors limiting distribution; nutrition; relationship between... |

This study concerns mainly 2 species Merluccius capensis and M. paradoxus; M. polli is a more northern species though the 3 species are known to inhabit the same regions. The life cycle, seasonal migrations geographical distribution and fishing grounds of the 2 main species are discussed in detail. The intensity of fishing in this region, over the past 10 years has increased to such an extent that during 1968 -1970 this production accounted for one half level on a world-wide basis. Attempts have been made by Britain to market this fish as a frozen product. |

During a 3 week study, a total of 55 individuals of the redlip blenny (Ophioblennius atlanticus) were observed for at least two 15-minute periods, and several for ten of such periods. The sizes of their territories were estimated, the color pattern of each specimen an intra and interspecific interactions were recorded. The mean territory size of the redlip blenny in the study area appeared to be greater than that of these blennies studied in Curacao and Barbados by NURSALL (1977), the difference reflecting perhaps different methods of identifying the territories or a lower density of O. atlanticus in the Santa Marta área. Territories did not appear to be as consistently defended at the study area as at Barbados/Curacao and our impression ¡s that... |

The research programme developed within in the framework of the project study of the Paluel site allowed us to highlight, near the drainage channel of the Durdent, a sea trout fishery using fixed nets in the area of the swaying of the tides. This activity, very much in use in the eastern English Channel and along the southern shoreline of the North Sea, not only for catching certain amphibiotic species but also species that are strictly of the sea, represents a sizeable cause of the mortality rate for salmonid populations during their coastal migrations. The studies begun on this fishery in 1980 have as their goal to assess the size of the salmonid catches near the site, especially of sea trout, and to acquire more complete knowledge of the catch, biology... |
